high score girl – 01

from https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=20797

Plot Summary: It’s 1991 and the heyday of the 2D fighting game boom. Sixth-grader Haruo spends practically his entire day at an arcade in the seedy part of town, oblivious to the world around him. However, one day at his usual arcade, he encounters Akira, his female classmate with good grades and money. She may look out of place at the arcade, but she is actually a top-class gamer. Akira completely outmatches Haruo in one Street Fighter II round after another, and their relationship develops from this unlikely encounter. ”

i am a product of my time.

this strange nostalgia. this makes me want to play more games… and not just the few jrpgs a year. though i didn’t really get really good at games until N64…

this show is quaint, and sweet.

Satsuriku no Tenshi – 01

a very strange, hard-to-follow episode…. but it looks like it was intentional. this is based on a freeware horror adventure game made with rpg maker? exciting…(?)

getting the buddhist vibes with feeling of “trapped by desire” flow here though.

i’ll keep watching for now…

i actually liked the latter half this show more than i did the former half.

i enjoyed the plot twist about Papa and the princess.

but the last few episodes really imploded. it felt like the director were super rushed and were just trying to finish the show.

the similarities to evangelion remained, and there was a slight homage to MadoMagi (giant pink haired girl in space).

the sudden mish-mosh of buddhist philosophical/psychological ideas was very… japanese, but seemed out of place.

all in all, a decent forgettable show that has infamy that will outlive the actual show.

i finally decided to watch this… though the controversy was a big part of why.

though not terrible, this show is mostly lackluster. a lot of the more powerful motifs and themes are not well portrayed. the animation style and music also do not help. the characters and voice-acting are pretty good though.

it really wasn’t until episode 13 that i was really interested in this show.

oh, and for that infamous episode 14… i get why it was such a big deal… but this similar plot line has been done before! and been done better! (ef)

AND don’t get me started on the similarities with evangelion

teenage pilots of mecha, mysterious controversies and reasons by adults with ulterior motives, change of humans living on the planet due to some drastic event. i’m surprised that they didn’t have zero two be 01 to be more like rei’s designation.

anyway, the show is finally a bit interesting, so let’s see what’s next…

yabai.

i thought this show would be just okay. a school life sports slice of life feel good show.

no.

this is to the core. it looks like it’s from a seinen magazine.

the animation is cut-throat good. this year has been a landmark in terms of utilization of computer graphics in anime, but this show does it so well. it blends the non CG animation with the CG so well that hasn’t been done before.

the attention to detail is sickening. it’s amazing.

the japanese anime style existential crisis – so powerfully constructed in such a short time frame.

in fact, they’re more alive and real than a lot of people i interact with.

the beginning was very iffy, and the intro of this was rather speedy… but overall it was done alright and set the stage for the ending of the first episode.

this recent explosion of “living in a game” and “other world specifically with the isekai terminology” has been interesting. for me .hack and log horizon are still on top. though, most shows in this genre are pretty good. as for the isekai shows… one can say it was always a concept that was used a lot… but it’s different lately. after all, that is one of the draws of anime, the fantasy “other world” aspect. in a way though, these new shows (to me) showcases a more banal representation of this “liminality”, an almost fusion of the slice of life of “this world” with the fantasy of the “other world.” this is begging for a jungian /depth psychology analysis.

considering daily and reach goals akin to quests is a useful psychologial tool.

this is a reference to a previous series/show… for it’s mystical/psychological/relation to spirituality use (of which others probably used it for), or a generic use of a cool sounding word. i wonder if it affects the plot directly at all.

i feel like this show is and will be underappreciated. it looks like it is on netflix, so maybe that will give it more exposure.

it is so… anime. the motifs, intentions, plot, characters… are all japanese. they are all things i have come to love in japanese media (games, anime, etc) over the past… however long.
