the first half of this episode is really to set up the show. by itself it’s mostly pretty boring. it introduces that the main character is a female youth in high school with a bunch of friends. The group seriously play around with trying to reach “another world” for no real reason (maybe).
And they succeed.
And that world is not peaceful.
And there is another Tsuchimiya Asuka (the main character) there doing the fighting.
And they cross paths.
Not too unlike other shows where the main characters unknowingly cross into a parallel world, almost as if it is destiny – Bleach immediately comes to mind. But it’s a common story.
But the intrigue and mystery improves the story and makes you want to know more. And there’s a cliffhanger.
and the OST and music isn’t bad at all.
i had low expectations starting this, but it’s looking pretty good.
again to borrow from Jungian thought, the concept of the collective unconscious and introverted intuition, that I believe is strongly present in Japanese entertainment subculture, is every present here. This is the pre-quantum physics thought of space and time and the possibility of 1) their existence and 2) being able to cross to them.
This brings to mind the Wheeler-Everitt concept of quantum physics, the many world interpretation. How this plays into our every day sensabilities, and our psyche’s experience of it is such an ever present theme in a lot of anime).
I think this has a lot to do with the Japanese traditional “religion” of Shintoism and the sense that liminality is every present and can be experienced.
And we have a transformation scene. And she has a zettai ryouiki of sorts – which one can argue is simply for fanservice for the hetero-male-gaze, but it’s simply a part of the culture.
Personal identity. Multiple selves. I can also draw a parallel from this to the Jungian concepts of the Persona and the Self, along with quantum-multi-world thoughts. But we’ll see how this goes.
