Summer 2021 quickie recap

Short and sweet look at Summer 2021 anime shows.

Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken (Tensura) S2 part 2: Overall a great series but this was a relatively weak cour. The world-building was great, a bit slow though, and the climax at the end did not meet the expectation of the rest of the cour. There are more and more characters, which I am fine with. Veldora’s otaku antics were entertaining. Rank: B ish, +/-

Kobayashi-sah chi no maidragon S (season 2): KyoAni top-tier quality for this fantasy context slice of life + tints of comedy and drama and relational development… with plentiful female dragon breast boing-ing. This is just done so well it’s worth watching. Will I remember it a decade from now? Yes. Would I rewatch it? meh-be. Rank: B ish.

Vanitas no Carte: Couldn’t finish episode 1. I know it was a setting up episode… but stilll. There was no motivation to keep watching.

Tantei wa mou, Shindeiru: I marathon-ed this in a few days. I fell in love with Siesta… the rest of the show was okay. The real greatness of this show was the interactions between Siesta and Kimi. Everything else in the show was meh. Siesta x Kimi interaction S rank. Rest of the show C rank.

Kanojo mo kanojo: Romantic Comedy with a twist – it started off really well and I thought they were going to do a deeper dive into the psychological of attraction but once Milika came into the story it was meh. Best girl Shino wasn’t a big part until later. The animation and voice-acting is top quality though. Rank C.

Bokutachi no remake: The “reliving part of life” genre. It started off really exciting and the episode where they covered Haruhi/Enoz’s “God Knows…” was nostalgic (though really it just made me realize how great Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu is… oh and I read the recent LN of the series which I really liked, but anyway). The ending of the season was interesting as it finally introduced the idea that protagonist can remake multiple times. It was alright. Characters and story are fine. The dramatic moments of transformation and inner struggle… were pretty underwhelming though. Rank C. I would watch the next part of animated and revise.

Jahy-sama no kujikenai!: Best comedy show of the season. Weird setting, some running gags… but the balance between slice of life, fantasy, wackiness pans out really well. There is also an interesting psychology of observing chibi vs normal versions of Jahy. I would definitely rewatch this. (well this show is still going on). Rank A.

Otome game no hametsu flag shika nai akuyaku reijou ni tensei shiteshimatta… X (HameFura season 2): A bit of a letdown after season 1 since the sense of impending doom was not as present. A good cast of characteristics, mellow. Catarina is charming as a protagonist. Watchable yes, rewatchable? eh…. Rank C.

Shiroi Suna no Aquatope: PA works’ stuff is a hit or miss. This was a huge hit with me (show still going on). PA Works tells stories that don’t otherwise get told. Their slice of life REALLY feel like life. The struggles and antics of the characters feel lifelike, relatable, and touching. Oh animation and voice-acting are great. Rank A.

Deatte 5-byou de battle: Show where main character is really cunning and smart and put into life-death situation with special powers genre. Starts off okayyyyyyyy then gets mehhhhhhhh. Worth skipping over. Rank C/D.

Cheat kusushi no Show life: wowwwwww … watched part of episode 1. So slow and uninteresting. Maybe it got better. But episode 1 did not help.

100-man no inochi no ue ni ore wa tatterisu 2nd season: Actually didn’t watch. Season 1 wasn’t good enough for me to watch this.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu: I am a huge Higurashi series fan. These are the answer arcs to Gou’s question arcs. Except that they pretty much were just the same arcs from Satoko’s perspective. The ending was a bit abrupt… and Eua’s identity and the whole red eyes thing was not explained well at all. i have mixed feelings but they did have huge expectations to live up to. Not sure how to rank this.

Magia Record season 2: I didn’t play the game so maybe that’s why it was harder for me to follow. They picked up where season 1 ended… and the pace is obscenely sped up. And for some reason there were only 8 episodes? It could have been better as a longer cour. I didn’t finish it… and well there’s a season 3 coming up. Maybe I’ll wait and rewatch from the beginning. Oh and Kajiura, Yuki didn’t do the music which is a HUGE bummer.

Boku no hero academia (season 5): I’m sure if I wasn’t one of those people that watched the Dragonball series as it came out or Naruto that this would have been one of my Shounen shows for the win but not as much. I still think it’s great and offers plenty of psychological inquiry possibilities. Rank B.

Tokyo Revengers: Watched it during summer but did not continue. It was just okay. I’d rather re-watch Steins;Gate.
